In March, lounge singer "Tyrone Fox"
was commissioned by the
governor of Kentucky
as a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
Being named a colonel
is the highest honor
bestowed by the
commonwealth of Kentucky;.
The honor is given to those who make extraordinary
contributions to the community, state or
nation,
and for "special achievements of all kinds."
A person doesn't have to be from the
Bluegrass State to become a member of the
order.
It
all started when a member of the order
attended one of Fox's shows at the Tropicana last year.
The Brooklyn, New York native said he
serenaded a longtime
wheelchair-bound woman who was so touched by the healing
spirit of his music she got up and walked a few steps to hug him.
After the show, a man introduced himself to Fox
as a Kentucky Colonel
and told the performer he intended to
nominate him for admission to the Order of
Kentucky Colonels,
which was established in 1932.
"He
said you deserve to be a colonel," Fox recalled.
"I
just laughed because I didn't know what it was. . . .
I've never even stepped foot in Kentucky."
Membership in the Order of Kentucky Colonels
has been accorded to
such famous, Influential and talented
figures as British Prim Minister Winston
Churchill,
U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, astronaut
John Glenn,
athletes Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods and
entertainers
Carol Channing, Ann Margaret, Dwight Yoakam,
Jeff Foxworthy and Woopi Goldberg.
